A Tool Derived from the Vicia faba Micronucleus Assay, to Assess Genotoxicity, Cytotoxicity or Biostimulation of Novel Compounds Used in Agriculture

The increased use of biostimulants in conventional agriculture and organic farming requires the implementation rapid tests to determine their effectiveness enhancing plant growth protection against abiotic stresses. However, innocuity health has rarely been demonstrated. We used Vicia faba Micronucleus Assay, as described by standard AFNOR EN ISO 29200(2020-05) reveal biostimulant, genotoxic cytotoxic effects four commercialized wood-based products comparing mitotic indices micronucleus frequencies with respect controls. Neither genotoxicity, measured frequency (MN), nor cytotoxicity, assessed Mitotic index counts, was observed. Additionally, one these stimulants (BHS®) conferred protective contaminants (maleic hydrazide or lead nitrate). describe that plotting micronuclei allows discrimination between cytotoxic/genotoxic from levels. experiments were successfully transposed other agronomical important crops such corn sunflower. This technique can be valuable industrials, assess growth, potential cytoxicity genotoxicity any new biostimulant organic.
